HTC Considering Purchasing Their Own OS

September 12, 2011 No Comments

Even though HTC has continually been supportive of Google’s acquisition of Motorola, they are still considering purchasing their own operating system. Cher Wang, of HTC has gone on record to say:

“We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse.”

Wang went on to say that HTC has a distinct advantage in that they are adaptable to different OS’s.

“We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform,” Wang said. “Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS.”

There has been a lot of speculation about whether or not Android OEM’s are really as supportive of Android’s Motorola acquisition as they let on. Since the news was released many OEM’s seem to be looking for alternatives should Google turn its’ back on them.
The way things are going, I wouldn’t be too surprised if in a couple of years most OEM’s are running their own OS. This unfortunately would limit choices for your average consumer who might want a certain phone running a certain OS. Hopefully most OEM’s choose not to sever existing relationships and continue to work on existing OS’s.
