Halo’s ‘Threshold’ – to Unify Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone Further – Coming 2015?December 2, 2013 No Comments
Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone fans were excited when they heard that Microsoft was planning on going after Apple’s Siri with a project codenamed Cortana. The reason behing all the excitement was the fact that Cortana is a popular and important character in the Halo series and the name plus character traits would fit perfectly with the service. NowZDnet’s Mary Jo Foley is reporting that another Microsoft project has been named after a Halo reference.
Project ’Threshold’ is to be a series of updates for all three Microsoft OS platforms (Xbox One, Windows and Windows Phone) “that will advance them in a way to share even more common elements.” For those who aren’t famiiar with the name ’Threshold’, it is the planet around which the halo ring orbited in the first Halo game.
Microsoft has already begun working on making all the different OS’s work together better but it looks like project ‘Threshold’ looks to blend all their different opeating systems further.
ZDnet’s Mary Jo Foley: But Threshold will add another level of commonality across Microsoft’s various Windows-based platforms, sources said. With the Threshold wave, Microsoft plans to support the same core set of “high value activities” across platforms. These high-value activities include expression/documents (Office, and the coming “Remix” digital storytelling app, I’d think); decision making/task completion (Bing, I’d assume); IT management (Intune and Workplace Join, perhaps?) and “serious fun.”
I honestly think that making the operating systems play nicer together and unifying as much as they can will allow Microsoft to move faster when it comes to pushing out updates, growing each platform and gaining developer interest.
