To Beat Apple’s Siri, Microsoft Plans to Unleash Halo’s Cortana (Update: Images)

September 12, 2013 2 Comments

With Apple’s Siri being a popular feature on Apple’s IOS platform on iPhones and iPads, Microsoft has refused to put out a competitor or updated version of TellMe until it gets things right and they go leaps and bounds over the rest

Microsoft Bing’s director Stefan Weitz

“We have had internal debates about when to ship something. We could come out with something now like them, but it wouldn’t be state of the art. It’s too constrained to be an agent now,”

“We are not shipping until we have something more revolutionary than evolutionary.”

“There are teams working hot and heavy on this right now.”

WPC however is reporting that alongside the Windows Phone 8.1 (blue) update, which we saw glimpse of recently. Microsoft is hard at work to try and push a Siri competitor and the codename for the service is ‘Cortana’.

“…an overhaul to the TellMe service is in the works under the codename ‘Cortana’ that should give Siri a run for its money…”

Now I know this is just a codename but being a huge Halo fan, I am pretty excited. Cortana is the famous fictional artificially intelligent (AI) character is the Halo series alongside Master Chief. Now if Microsoft is working on something that goes far beyond the call of duty when it comes to a service like this, they would be even smarter to leave the name as is. Imagine the service having the Cortana voice as well? Maybe I am just dreaming and my thinking is blurred by the fact that I have been a fan since the debut of the original Xbox but I hope Microsoft is at least leaving the option on the table.

Update:  Cortana Personal Assistant

TheVerge has recently leaked images of Cortana running on Windows Phone.

How about Cortana as the female voice and Master Chief as the male voice. It may be a bit gimmicky but I’ll bet it would entice some people to buy WP just for that.
