Microsoft to Buy Nook Media LLC For $1 Billion? Nook Running Windows by 2015?May 9, 2013 1 Comment
I have been a loyal Barnes & Noble customer for over a decade. Of course when the Nook first came out, I purchased one for myself, the wife and anyone else I could talk into getting one (even though it runs Android). Over the years however, things have changed and the Nook business isn’t looking to good.
Back in the summer of 2012, Microsoft settled their lawsuit with B&N over their little Android patent dispute. In the process forming a new partnership and after a few months, finally naming it Nook Media LLC. Shortly after, everyone was salivating over a Nook device running Windows, specifically Windows RT. So far, all we have seen is the Nook app for Windows 8 and Windows RT.
Now, TechCrunch is reporting that Microsoft is actually thinking about purchasing the struggling Nook Media LLC for a whopping $1 Billion. If Microsoft does pull the trigger, how will this effect Nook as we know it today? Techcrunch is also reporting that Nook Media LLC will stop producing Nook tablets running Android by 2014 (Nook running Windows anyone?).
I think this is the perfect chance for Microsoft to get cheap Windows tablets on the market. Create a Nook that is running on Windows RT for $199 – $249. If you take off the built in Office and obviously block some apps from being downloaded like Kindle, I really believe that this will shake the industry and also help the Windows ecosystem grow.
I really can’t wait to see how this turns out!
