International Carriers Watch as ‘Skype’ Breaks RecordsFebruary 18, 2013 1 Comment
Back in May of 2011, Microsoft shocked everyone when they purchased Skype, the leading Internet communications company for $8.5 billion. Microsoft however has taken the company and made it even bigger, so much so that it is now on the verge of threatening international carriers.
Microsoft has pushed Skype’s traffic to grow as over 44% last year. In 2012, Skype also broke records in the year by hosting the same amount of calls as one third of the world’s phone traffic. Skype actually hosted 167 billion minutes in 2012, the 44% increase is more than twice that of all international carriers combined. If Microsoft and the Skype team continue this amazing momentum, there is no telling what kind of dent they can make in the international calling game. Better yet, if they can manage to even make it the standard way to make a long distance phone call.
