How to the Force Windows Phone 7.8 Update

January 30, 2013 22 Comments

Today, Nokia announced that Windows Phone 7.8 was here. They stated that the update started rolling out today and would be making its rounds to folks around the world for the next few weeks.

Turns out however that our old forcing NoDo trick has been working for folks now with the Windows Phone 7.8 update. For those that don’t know the old trick, here it is.

  • Start Zune
  • Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
  • Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
  • Start the update search in Zune
  • About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off).
  • Zune finds Mango-Update. Press OK.
  • Connect to the internet again and install the update.

There you have it, this quick and easy workaround will work if (and only if ) your carrier has already began rolling out the update.

Good Luck!

Yip exactly the same here…. with a little nokia update tapped on the end. Am I the only one though who finds the new sized (square tile) hard to stomach? I like the idea we get a fuller screen, but would have prefered the same sized standard tiles just better placed. Guess it will grow on me. Still thanks to WP7Connect and a little trial and error (oh and some time) I have 7.8. Check youtube first to see if you actually want to adopt though

easiest way to force update is to use packet analyzer (like wireshark). Update contains 4 phases, first (1) is http request (green in wireshark by default), next (2) encrypted data (grey) -> (3) http request (green / here internet should be disconnected) -> (4) http request (green) – this last request should be avoided to allow zune show available / forced updates.

Worked for me on Nokia Lumia 610 from Italy. Although I had to wait about 6~7 seconds before unplug the ethernet cable when Zune initiated the search for update. With the manual method, I tried several times before getting the timing right. First it updated to 8779, then 8783, and 8858, and after that, the update software found two more updates without manual intervention to the latest version 8862.
