Rumor: Microsoft Launching MS Branded WIndows Phone in 2013? (WP Surface)

October 1, 2012 4 Comments

There is a nasty rumor going around that Microsoft will be launching its own branded Windows Phone in the first half of 2013. China Times is reporting that Microsoft has been developing its own MS branded Windows Phone for the last 4 months. They are also stating that Microsoft has hand picked a manufacturer to do the deed.

I call bullshit on this as Windows Phone not only has Nokia on its side churning up devices that push technology forward but it has also gained HTC as they are focusing more now on Windows Phone and less on Android. Where the Microsoft Surface tablet is needed in the PC industry to lead and push all the manufacturers into making better products, Microsoft already has that with Nokia.

Besides, I doubt they would of let HTC brand their phones as ‘Windows Phone’ 8x and 8s if they had plans to make their own devices.

Interesting piece of rumors. Would Microsoft take responsibility to finance manufacturing and marketing Windows smartphones made by Nokia? Then the manufacturer would not have to suffer from having chosen Windows Phone operating system. Sounds fair, because it would save the manufacturer from potential massive losses.

The same thing happened recently with Hype around the WinRT Tablet and $199 pricing ( http://developingzack.blogspot.com/2012/09/bamboozled-by-rumors-of-199-microsoft.html ) and it was all supposedly possible, because it was a MSFT branded tablet. These new operating Systems WinRT and WinPhone8 needed to be tested internally before there could be an OEM or RTM release version. If you consider that the chicken cant come before the egg, you’ll realize this was just for internal testing.

That’s a gorgeous looking phone (if a little too iPhone-esque), and I’d buy the hell out of it, but I have to agree: I don’t think they need to make their own just yet when they’ve got these big name guys pushing awesome phones.

If they ARE doing it, however, they’d better announce it soon so I don’t get a Lumia instead! Really wanting the 920 but I’d love to see what a Surface phone could do before switching.
