25% of Windows Phone XBOX Live Games Incompatible with 256 MB Windows Phones

May 30, 2012 4 Comments

All About Windows Phone has recently published an interesting inventory of Windows Phone games comparing their compatibility with smart phones containing less than 512 MB of RAM.  The results are somewhat disappointing for low-memory users: even though only 1.6 percent out of all Marketplace games fail to install on lower-end devices, more than 25% of XBOX Live games (30 out of 119), and 4.6 percent of the most popular 10,000 games downloaded (by UK statistics) don’t work on popular Windows Phones.

256MB compatible games

Of course, the situation is improving gradually. AAWP notes that just 250 incompatible applications have been published in the Marketplace since the release of the newest Windows Phone SDK (7.1.1), or only 0.8% of the total number of apps made available in the same period. Gradually, it seems, developers are heeding Microsoft’s warnings, and more closely following documentation for Tango development. That being said, a more expensive Windows Phone with more RAM is, at this point, worth the extra few dollars.

This will change as developers start to optimize their games. After reading this all I had to do was change all my textures to DxtCompressed. Sure they don’t look as pretty under a magnifying glass but I think users will appreciate being able to play with any Windows Phone…. also won’t hurt my download numbers ;)

Certainly true. I’m sure those numbers decrease as updated versions of apps are released, and more Tango phones come out.

Edit: *will* decrease. Those numbers *will* decrease.
