Concept Art: Windows Phone Metro UI Reimagined

April 14, 2012 2 Comments

I bumped into this concept art and I am very interested to hear what you guys think.

Windows Phones famed Metro UI has been recently imagined by Yanko Andreev. The design takes a page from Windows 8 and makes the tiles act more like widgets with controls right on the tiles.

I like some of the aspects of this design but I think it might be too much to remain ‘Metro’ and might make things a bit too messy. I really like the simplicity of Metro on Windows Phone and I lean more to this recent art of a concept phone called the Lumia 920. The Metro UI on that takes from Windows 8 but still keeps it very clean by just adding groups.

I do like having more control though over the all around look and feel.

But I feel that all these extra controls like for instance on the navigation, really take away from what Metro is supposed to be.

What do you guys think? Would you like this type of design on your Windows 8 phone?

Do you like this re-imagined Metro UI?

I can’t see the horizontal scrolling in portrait, but I definitely want pinch to zoom.

Favourite thing about this is being able to group like tiles into columns. Having a Phone column, a Feeds/News column, etc. would be awesome. Currently I do find the constant scrolling down my list of live tiles to be a little long.

I don’t think the increased granular control or pinch to zoom to an “all apps” screen are particularly necessary. Ditto Quick Settings. Take the new tile layouts from this and the simplicity of a notification centre like this concept http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ikaUd2602I and you’d have something truly awesome.

That said, the controls on every tile are pretty distracting. I don’t disagree with media controls on the Music tile, or the Add Event control on the Calendar tile. These are things you want to be able to access in a hurry, and having shortcuts to certain common functions on large live tiles might not be a bad thing. It’d make Smoked by Windows Phone that much more effective.
