New Bing Vision Feature Coming in March – UK Bing Vision Gets Upgrade

February 18, 2012 2 Comments

Windows Phone UK announced yesterday that Bing Vision will be getting an upgrade to also feature scanning DVD’s, Book Covers, Etc. Something that US users have been benefiting from since Mango. UK users will really enjoy this one as it really makes it really easy to find information on products and compare prices.

Bing Vision – available today (17 February 2012)

As well as allowing users to detect product information from QR codes and Microsoft Tags, Bing Vision now scans barcodes, CD, DVD and book covers. Plus Bing Vision can now provide local availability and cost comparison information on goods so people can quickly purchase items of interest while on the go.

A completely new feature that they announced however is the ability to scan newspaper articles and get pointed to the corresponding article online.

Bing Image Matching for Newspapers (rolling out in March on Bing Vision)

Enabling people to quickly find the digital version of a print magazine or newspaper article, Bing Image Matching for Newspapers allows users to take a photo of an article using their Windows Phone camera and link directly to a digital version of the article online.

Offering global access, consumers will have access to content from over 3,000 publications worldwide.

This sounds like an amazing feature that I can imagine will get used a lot. Passing by a loose newspaper that catches your eye? Just scan it and keep walking.

We will have more information as soon as the new feature is implemented next month.

I’ve tried this today and it still doesn’t work… although it says ‘Scan barcodes, QR Codes, Microsoft Tags, books, CDs and DVDs’, the only option when viewing a book, cd or dvd is “scan text” which then lets you translate any that it finds on the cover.
