Microsoft: Windows Phone Does Not Support NFC – Coming Next Year

December 12, 2011 No Comments

Just as I suspected, Windows Phone does not support NFC and it will be making its debut with the Tango update which is due next year. Recently Will Coleman,  product manager at Microsoft UK, said that Windows Phone did in fact have NFC and it was up to manufacturers to enable it.

“As far as I’m aware, NFC is supported by [Windows Phone], but needs to be enabled by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer),” said Coleman. “So, if any OEM wants to enable it, that can be done by all means.”

That sounded wrong to me and it was as Microsoft just let Winrumors know today that the statement was incorrect.

“Microsoft would like to correct a previous statement it made around Near Field Communications, While NFC is not currently supported on Windows Phone 7.5, it is coming. We expect NFC-enabled Windows Phone devices to ship within the next year.”

Looks like we could be bumping to make payments or to connect to bluetooth headsets soon enough.
