Microsoft Amused at HTC HD2 Mango Hackers – “Enjoy The Juice”

July 11, 2011 No Comments

I don’t think that there was a phone more liked on Windows Mobile than the HTC HD2. It came along at the end of the winmo era and tons of people flocked to it because of the giant 4.3 screen and a couple of other cool specs at the time. I really had hoped the HD2 would have been upgradable to Windows Phone 7. Alas, Microsoft stated the device would not be because it was missing a few minimum requirements.

Fast forward about 14 months and we are writing articles about how to get Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) on the HTC HD2. Not only did the homebrew community find a way to run WP7 on the old Winmo device but they are now running the Mango update which isn’t even released yet.  Microsoft was asked about their stance on the hacking being done to bring Mango to the HTC HD2 . Microsoft’s response?

“We say tinker away with Mango and enjoy the juice,”

“But beware the fine print — unlocking phones may void your warranty.”

We have seen Microsoft soften their stance on the whole homebrew community in the past year and I believe it has been very beneficial to them.
