Game Review: Plants vs Zombies

June 27, 2011 3 Comments

My life will never be the same…

As I write this, I am wondering why I am not planting any sunflowers or peashooters right now to try and defend my yard. Plants vs Zombies is addicting, so addicting in fact that the only reason it has taken me this long to write up my review is because I have been too busy playing the game. This Windows Phone version of the game has to be the most complete edition to this cult classic.

What is so great about this game? Everything! From the beautiful visuals that shines on WP7 Xbox Live to the sounds and gameplay. The way that a person that has never played the game can just jump in and learn the game with ease. In the same token the way the difficulty cranks up and becomes more challenging as you go on. Plants vs Zombies is hands down one of the best games on Windows Phone to date.

Playing the game is simple. Place plants on your yard and they will defend your house from the incoming Zombie invasion. What are they after? What every good standing zombie is after… YOUR BRAINS!!! At your disposal you have a crazy amount of different plants to help you succeed and survive the onslaught. Beware as there is also many different kinds of zombies that will attack you. All that appear very different from one another and have different powers for instance, a football zombie that is very difficult to kill or Disco dancing one that summons back up.

You can play Plants vs Zombies in so many different ways – thanks to the many game modes that are available on this Windows Phone version. Things like Walnut Bowling to a frantic Slot Machine Game. Every game mode and feature is here. Achievements also adds a huge amount of character to the game. The Xbox Live achievements do not feel tacked on at all. They are not easy to get and earning them throughout the game feels like an actual achievement.

This review can go on and on about how awesome this game is but I really need to go back and play some more. PopCap has outdone themselves with this port of Plants vs Zombies for the Windows Phone.

The extra game modes are nice, but the inferior framerate bothers me so much that it keeps me from enjoying it as much as the version on my iPod.

Experienced the small lag when there’s tons of action on the screen. Hasn’t really bothered me though. There’s a fix coming for the level 5-7 bug… maybe it will tackle the small lag also…

I notice a considerable amount of lag every time I finish a level. When whatever new plant I pick up after beating the last zombie moves to the center of the screen, the beams of light behind it seem to move no more than 10 fps. Maybe it’s my hardware, but the Trophy is really no slouch compared to other WP7 phones. I hope the upcoming fix addresses it!
