Windows Phone and Bing Maps to the Rescue

May 21, 2011 No Comments

We use our Windows Phone everyday for fun, work, getting connected to those that matter most to us. Occasionally I use Bing maps to locate areas around me like restaurants, shops, parks.

One very lucky guy though used it for a reason that trumps all the different ways I have ever used my Windows Phone, he used it to save his life!

Martin Tirion was on a vacation to Greece and went boating with a few people. The GPS was completely screwed up and his small boat ran out of fuel. For 4 hours they drifted into worse and worse conditions. What saved him? Bing Maps on his Windows Phone 7, which gave a pinpoint location to give to the crew looking for them and all was right in the world.

‘The guy who picked us up told us we were very, very lucky. We were in open sea and big waves could have tipped our boat over. Big ships could have made waves that would have tipped the boat over. We dropped our anchor just before cliffs of an island (the small one to the right of the blue X) that would have damaged our small boat. The anchor line however was so thin that it could have snapped … and crashed our boat into the rocks of the small island.’

Just look how far off the crew and the boats GPS was. Windows Phone 7 and Bing Maps most likely saved their lives.
