Microsoft Buys Skype! Bonus? Qik (Video Sharing)

May 12, 2011 No Comments

So by now everyone know that Skype has been purchased by Microsoft for billions of dollars. Everyone has their own feeling behind the deal, which is bound to happen since it involved all that cash. I absolutely love the move Microsoft made to purchase Skype. Was it expensive? yes it was. I believe, going that route gave Microsoft an automatic contender versus Apple’s FaceTime (among other great things like Skype on Kinect, a helping hand with Lync, etc.). While Apple’s FaceTime is only on iPhone, Skype can be everywhere and should definitely give Apple a run for their money.

Something alot of people aren’t talking about though is that Microsoft will also be getting Qik in the deal. Qik was a start-up that was purchased by Skype earlier this year. They specialize in video sharing (even live video sharing). This should definitely be a huge part in Microsoft’s plans for world domination Windows Phone. Hopefully a front facing camera will be required for any post Mango phone. I can’t wait to see Skype and Qik integrated into everything Microsoft.

What is Qik

  • Capture special or spontaneous moments on video using your mobile phone.
  • Share the moments live or anytime later with anyone you choose.

Why use Qik?

  • It’s convenient. Interesting moments can happen anywhere. Your mobile phone is the one device that’s always with you.
  • It’s easy. Before you finish recording, your Qiks are already saved to your online Video Gallery, ready for safe-keeping or sharing. What could be easier than that?

Who can you share with?

  • Anyone you choose. Share your Qiks with a single family member, a group of friends, or broadcast to your entire community. You decide.
• Many sharing options. With a single tap, share by email, SMS, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, your blog, through your own Video Gallery on Qik.com, or directly to another mobile phone.

When can you share Qiks?

  • Live. Share your Qiks live (right as you are recording them)!
  • Later. If friends and family aren’t available to watch live, they can see your Qiks anytime later that’s convenient.
