Game Review: Murphid
May 11, 2011 No CommentsXBLIG Murphid was ported to the Windows Phone recently. Shortly after downloading the trial and playing it for a bit, I forked over the measly .99 cents to purchase the full game.
Decapod Studios made a smart move by creating a Windows Phone version. As a game for people on the go, the game is just fun and addicting. The game itself is like Tetris on steroids. Please do not confuse this game as just a clone though because you will be sadly mistaken. Yes the game is to drop blocks of different colors to try and connect 3 or more of the same to eliminate the pieces from the ‘board’ but there is so much more.
The game has you dropping 2 connecting blocks at a time. You have to try and match the colors already laid out on the bottom. What’s the difference with this and Tetris you ask? Well the blocks at the bottom keep moving up as time goes by. Also depending on how the blocks are connecting to each other, your blocks may not fall down like some of the others while your breaking blocks(like they are stitched together).
[smartads]
The biggest difference and what makes this game awesome? Power-ups! Things like lightning bolts to totally destroy a whole line at a time. Bombs, paint (to color a bunch of the blocks the same color), chainsaw to slice through a few blocks, etc. There’s tons of cool power-ups that keep the game fresh and entertaining. I do wish the game had a better system to show you what each power-up did. I don’t know how many times I encountered one for the first time and totally mis-used it because I had no idea what it did.
While we are nitpicking, another troublesome fact is that the controls are done by buttons at the bottom of the screen instead of you being able to control the actual blocks with your fingers. It was a bit disappointing at first but you do forget about that fact pretty fast.
This is a great game to play on the Windows Phone and for only .99 cents it is a steal
