A group of students have developed an app to combat malaria for the Imagine Cup 2011. The 9th-annual Imagine Cup, sponsored by Microsoft, asks students to “imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.”

Tristan Gibeau – which is one of the team members who worked on this WP7 application, explained that  his team outfitted the Samsung Focus with a modified  microscopic camera lens. They take a picture of a blood sample, from there the WP7 app  does the rest by processing the data and detecting the parasites.

Tristan also added…

“It’s going to make a difference in trying to contain the outbreak of malaria,”

“In the big picture, it’ll hopefully help in the fight against most diseases out there and make everybody’s life a little easier.”

Not only does the contest promote Windows Phone but it does its part in trying to do some much needed good in the world. Good luck to the team as the Imagine Cup 2011 kicks off this weekend.
