Microsoft Responds to Custom ROMs and Improper Use of Product Keys
February 2, 2011 No CommentsMicrosoft has made their position public about recent news of custom WP7 ROMs being available for the HD2 and the improper use of product keys. Speaking about the ROMs in general they had the typical response…
"Microsoft does not support Windows Phones that have been altered from manufacturer and carrier specifications and we caution that such alterations can dramatically impact reliability, performance, compatibility and security"
As for the use of the product keys… things went a little different
"does make product keys available for select support scenarios" but "these keys are not intended to allow for the installation of software onto unsupported hardware. We are investigating whether or not additional steps are needed to discourage the improper use of product keys".
Now that sounds way more serious but understandably so. It’s one thing to use one of these custom ROMs. It’s a totally different thing to call in for product keys. We will let you know more as the story develops.
