Confirmed? Yahoo! Mail was to blame for High Data Usage!

January 31, 2011 No Comments

Paul Thurrott has confirmed that Yahoo! mail was the culprit behind the high data usage on some Windows Phone 7 devices.

What I discovered was shocking, although not surprising. Yahoo’s IMAP server (winmo.imap.mail.yahoo.com) does not respond to FETCH requests correctly.

Yahoo is sending ~25 times as much data as it needs to. (This can also be read as: Your phone is downloading ~25 times as much data as it normally would, had you sided with another email provider.)

There you have it. This is as confirmed as it’s ever going to get I guess. I was always weary about Yahoo! mail on any Windows Phone anyway. Back when I had my HTC Touch Pro 2. My phone use to lock up sometimes because my Yahoo! mail decided to try and download every piece of email I had. Oh well, I hope the problem has truly been 100% fixed.
