Microsoft working on Facetime competitor?

January 12, 2011 No Comments

At the CES press event, we saw new games get announced and the added copy/ paste functionality. It look like the most exciting things at CES were spoken amongst each other off the stage. One conversation that we missed out on was about building a competitor for FaceTime. A key WP7 employee commented on how they were working on a FaceTime like application for the Windows Phone Platform. They weren’t specific as to whether it be added on to WP7 or included with WP8.

More evidence of this came in as an image from the ‘Microsoft.Phone.Media.Extended.dll’. Where is clearly shows Microsoft working towards a front facing camera.

If all the above wasn’t “clue” enough. VOIP was uncovered in the WP7 registry. This feature might be definitely used towards a Video chat application.

With all the talk of Microsoft trying to mesh all their products together. This is a direction they need to go. They do not even need to give it a cool new name, just release it under the Windows Live Messenger services. Imagine being able to connect that way from your phone, your computer and don’t forget Microsoft’s hit product – the Xbox Kinect.
